If last night was going to begin with a little cloud over town, a 70% illuminated moon in the sky all night, and a temperature of -36° with a windchill to -46, then nothing could have played out more perfectly. Less than 45 kilometres away were entirely clear skies and a quickly advancing auroral arc. The aurora brightened and danced sporadically, perfect for a group and guide to indulge in intermittent warming sessions in the car, while still giving lots of time for star gazing.
