The early departure gamble

In a lot of ways, the quieter nights are easier to plan for. They are less rushed, a little more relaxed, and in a way, less stressful for me through the evenings. Departure times from town on these more average nights are far more simple.

It’s when we get into elevated auroral conditions that everything becomes more complicated, but more fun when we get it right of course.

There’s always a lot to consider, but when to leave town is often the most difficult question to answer. Leaving early comes with the risk of the aurora retreating leaving us with a long wait - not always so easy when temperatures are hovering around -40. That was the case for us a couple nights in a row, but the comfort, aside from the car heater, is that it was always just a matter of when, and not if.
